    About The Book

In December of 1938, a chemist in a German laboratory made a shocking discovery: When placed next to radioactive material, a Uranium atom split in two. That simple discovery launched a scientific race that spanned 3 continents. In Great Britain and the United States, Soviet spies worked their way into the scientific community; in Norway, a commando force slipped behind enemy lines to attack German heavy-water manufacturing; and deep in the desert, one brilliant group of scientists was hidden away at a remote site at Los Alamos. This is the story of the plotting, the risk-taking, the deceit, and genius that created the world’s most formidable weapon. This is the story of the atomic bomb.

Bomb: The Race to Build — and Steal — the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon

Bomb: The Race to Build — and Steal — the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon review:

The discovery of nuclear fission has changed forever the destiny of the world but in the field of physics for all the scientists that around the forties were beginning to familiarize with this new and exciting discovery, the idea that this would give rise to an atomic bomb and especially that it would really be used seemed science fiction. The path that led and united European scientists like Oppenheimer, Italians like Enrico Fermi and Americans is recalled step by step in this book that is dedicated especially to a young audience: we are not faced with a historical book in which facts and people are listed, the author Sheinkin uses a colloquial tone and makes the narrative intriguing and effective.

Nuclear fission was a discovery more unique than rare that led, as we know, to the tragic events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki first and Fukushima in recent years: between the pages of this book you can see how each scientist has carried out research to create the atomic bomb not with the intent to exterminate a population but to stop the spread of Hitler’s Nazis. In spite of the experiments made and the analytical minds applied on the research, there were few who conceived the effects of a possible atomic bomb as the ones I mentioned before, most of them did not believe possible such a wide range of destruction. The author dwells on each scientist who took part in this project outlining not only the character but also his past making each character three-dimensional accomplice also the photos that portray them.

Ultimately, the “Bomb: The Race to Build — and Steal — the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon” is above all instructive and wants to deal with a topic that has really changed the fate and face of our world and our modern society: with a clear and effective language Sheinkin is aimed at children, minds still young to educate them about the events and sensitize them.
